As I started writing this, my terminal window covered the entire screen. I used the built-in shortcut that moves it to another workspace, the one now committed to memory, probably pushing out some other piece of important information. A friend's birthday. Math, perhaps. Thankfully, Claude was already running in that terminal window.
"For some reason this terminal window is layered on top of everything, no matter what workspace it's on, and it won't tile with other apps. Why is that?"
Claude. The patient parent I never had. It fixed the issue, some kind of bug in the beta overlay I recently committed to. Ryoku, the kids call it.
As I've written about before, this is 100% the year of the Linux desktop... for me. Because I'm 50% committed to it. The other 50% belongs to my MacBook Pro, a workhorse pushing three-plus years and probably about ready to be put down, begging to be replaced by whatever the latest Mmmmm chip is. It's a long way of saying I'm 100% off Windows. I haven't seen those four blue boxes in over a year.
More Ms Means More Money
In the past, I've completely broken Windows. Sometimes by neglecting an update, sometimes by updating too soon. But the biggest breaks came from my perpetual need to theme it. A big reason I like macOS is its UI. Pre-Liquid Glass, it was mostly consistent across the board, pleasing to the eye and the mind. Even when it wasn't, it was a far cry from the Windows XP control panel or Vista file manager that would pop up at random like a specter from a previous decade.
Why are you like this?
I'd watch YouTube videos of beautiful desktops, file managers from the future, all sorts of unnecessary upgrades, and grow envious. Entire afternoons wasted trying to get Rainmeter to look just right. To this day, I refuse to keep anything on my desktop for more than a day. I crave a clean, organized OS to get me through the daily grind.
That's partly what attracted me to Linux. Full control. No corporate backdoor or bureaucratic menu left behind. No random update in the middle of a project, no push for a feature I never asked for. But of course, my desire to make my desktop as fluid as possible, as gorgeous as the system will allow, persists.
Themes are fine, but I felt like I was missing something. I dabbled with Hyprland, but it wasn't for me, partly because the community seems like a pretty insufferable group of dweebs. Then, because YouTube knows me better than I know myself, I was served the following video.
Terrible thumbnail. And yet, I was intrigued. I watched the whole thing, presented by a young man suffering from stage 4 brainrot. His heart was in the right place, though. Ryoku looked like exactly what I was after: a blend of macOS and Hyprland. Keyboard-driven, but not afraid to admit the mouse still has a place in this world. A shell that sits on top of CachyOS — no need to rewrite the entire system.
