“Basket case” is a term you don’t hear a lot these days. It originated from a (false) rumor around World War 1 about quadruple amputees coming back home and having to be carried in a basket. Then over the next few decades it was used to describe somebody who might throw all your clothes on the driveway and burn them while you’re at work. Eventually #TherapyTok came along and spoiled all the fun, making it a forbidden word in all but one circle: car culture.
When someone calls a car a basket case it means all of its parts are scattered in boxes & bags, and it’s more than likely a shell. Someone probably took it apart with great intentions, got overwhelmed, busy, or died, then abandoned it.
I’d made the trek from my failed Arkansas mountain expedition to a barn in Dallas to see the second cheapest Karmann Ghia convertible in the world.
