I've been in media for a long time. Most know me from YouTube, or from a very, very short stint on network television. Very few know about my child acting days.
Acting is a strong word for a profession built on being weak and easy to mold. In my case, it's also the wrong word. I wasn't an actor. I was a professional game show contestant.
One morning in 1991, a six-year-old me caught a new episode of Video Power™, where kids could compete against other equally stupid kids for prizes. The set was essentially a retrofitted McDonald's Play Place stuffed into a studio in downtown Queens, where contestants were allowed to strap games, consoles, and other videogame-adjacent velcro-laced paraphernalia to their person.
My parents ran a halfway house for wayward kids. Fatherless, crack-addicted-since-birth, all of them with a death grip on the family NES. My parents enjoyed the stipend. I was a six-year-old with no way to play Tetris in my own living room.
Around the same time, my parents were in the middle of a divorce, and since it was the early 90s they didn’t really notice when I left Los Angeles behind to become a professional video game contestant in New York. I told myself I was called by a higher purpose: collect every game, then play every game. Across 40 tapings I amassed the single largest collection of consoles and cartridges ever assembled by a first-grader.
Also a $10,000 scholarship.
You won't find any of this on tape. Most of those episodes never aired. The studio, tired of my antics and lack of personality, started shooting two versions of every taping: one with me for the live audience, and a sanitized rerun with some other kid for broadcast. Prizes, contestants, and fresh velcro were destroying their production budget. I was the Ken Jennings of Video Power™.
The show was cancelled later that season.
I didn't care. I had all the games the early 90s had to offer. So I dropped out of school and went international.
