I knew the day was coming. Every time I hopped in the Land Cruiser, the A/C hissing out of the vents was a smidge warmer, a teensy bit more humid. Soon it would give out completely, and I’d be airconditioner-less… a fate no American should ever have to experience. France.
And so it finally died. I traced the problem to a faulty (re: old, decrepit) evaporator, and because my garage is filled with other, more important cars, I set about fixing it on the street in front of my house. I’d mostly be digging under the dashboard, so my mechanic mess would be contained and out of sight.
Not that it really matters where I live because I’m surrounded by people thirty years older than me with LinkedIn’s that say “board member” who drive around with wine mouths in hand-built English cars. You’d think they’d snub their noses at this sort of thing, but they view it (and me) as a curiosity. I know this because they’ve said it to my face. Besides, there’s no HOA, only a “Civic Club,” which I refuse to join.
