I’ve been told not to judge a book by its cover, which is dumb. Why make an awesome cover if you don’t want it judged? Take Avenging Spirit for the Game Boy. I’m not going to fire it up and get mad that the meth’d out mobster on the box is gunning down what I can only assume is an elderly woman behind on her protection payments. That cover made a promise. I intend to hold it to that promise.
If anything, the cover got me into what turned out to be a pretty badass game. I’m not judging the merit of the final product by the billboard. But the billboard knew its audience. As an American with a preordained, DNA-level hardcoded bloodlust, a teeth-gritted mobster executing a delinquent grandmother is precisely the kind of marketing that works on me. Bravo, American marketing division for Avenging Spirit.

The game hooks you right away. You pick one of three characters: the mobster from the cover, a streetwalking trollop, or a fire-breathing dragon. That's when I realized I had no idea what the hell this game was about.
Yes, you play as a ghost (spirit). Yes, there's some kind of story (avenging). The kind that just pushes you from point A to B. But the cool part is dying, which typically sucks in most other games. Not here. Dying is more of an opportunity. Because you're an Avenging Spirit (duh), you can inhabit the husk of pretty much every bad guy you run into. Nunchuck-wielding ninjas. Spacemen with rockets. A crotch-flashing Dracula. It's way more inventive than a simple Game Over screen.
